Army Body Fat Calculator

This calculator follows the Army Body Fat Assessment for the Army Body Composition Program, published June 12, 2023 — the one-site tape method the U.S. Army now uses. For accuracy, measure your waist three times and enter the average, and round your weight to the nearest pound and your waist to the nearest 0.5 inch, as the assessment prescribes.

Body composition is a medical fitness requirement for joining and remaining in the U.S. Army, and the Department of Defense revises its standards every few years. In 2021, Army senior leaders commissioned a comprehensive study of how Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT) scores relate to body-composition standards; the data showed that soldiers with higher body fat percentages scored lower. The resulting changes to the Army Body Fat Assessment took effect on June 12, 2023, with the goal of keeping the force at the physical readiness its duties demand. The directive covers the Regular Army, the Army National Guard, and the U.S. Army Reserve.

The assessment itself is deliberately simple: a one-site circumference tape method needing only the abdominal circumference at the level of the belly button and body weight. The subject stands upright with arms resting at the sides; the waist is measured three times, averaged, and rounded to the nearest 0.5 inch, and weight is rounded to the nearest pound. Enter those numbers above and the calculator returns your body fat percentage and how it stands against the maximum for your age group.

A soldier who fails the tape method is flagged, but may request a supplemental assessment where the equipment is reasonably available:

Soldiers who decline the supplemental assessment, or who fail it, keep the flag and are enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). One way out is earned in advance: a record ACFT score of 540 or higher, with at least 80 points in every event, exempts a soldier from the body fat assessment entirely.

FAQ

How is the percentage calculated?

From two inputs only — waist circumference and body weight — through the sex-specific equations of the 2023 Army Body Fat Assessment. Unlike the older multi-site tape test, there is no neck or hip measurement and no height term.

What if I am over the standard?

The result tells you by how much, and what that excess means in pounds of body fat at your current weight. Officially, failing soldiers are flagged and may request a supplemental DXA, InBody 770, or Bod Pod assessment before ABCP enrollment.

Does age change the calculation?

No — age changes only the standard you are compared against, which relaxes across four bands (17–20, 21–27, 28–39, 40+). The percentage itself comes from waist and weight alone.
